Money has started to control the world, and we let it. People living in poverty can’t rise out of it because we (society) don’t give them the opportunity. Aren’t we the ‘Land of Opportunity’? Why are people poor? Why are some parts of the country in constant debt and poverty? The issue is that people in poverty do not have mobility in society in order to get out of poverty because costs of essential necessities are too expensive for the poor to achieve. (i.e. food, insurance, houses)

People were forced into poverty and not able to escape the ‘dungeon’ because they didn’t fill society’s requirements. Those who were homeless and starving had little opportunities to live a healthy and relatively happy life. During the Progressive era, different professions gathered together to help the urban poor. Civil engineers improve transportation by paving streets and building bridges. Sanitation engineers tried to solve problems concerning pollution, waste disposal, and impure water supplies.” “Despite a rise in employment, nearly half of New York City’s population is living near poverty levels — a Image result for povertyproblem that is particularly striking in the city’s Asian population…”, from the Huffington Post. Although the amount of people of poverty  has decreased, the fact of the matter is that there still is way too many people living in sub-standard conditions. New York is a very expensive city to live in, and it is getting less affordable by the minute. “The vacancy rate hovers around 2% and rental prices in Brooklyn went up 10% last year. The average rent for a one-bedroom in New York City (including all five boroughs) is calculated at $3,100”, according to Investopidia. Many families who are trying to live in New York must live in rented apartments with no air-conditions and “slum-looking” rooms.

The solution was to make necessities less expensive, but it is easier said than done.

This website has information provided by Ruth Lee, Amelia Volpe, Raitah Jinnat, Tejus Bhalla, and Christopher Lee from 822. Our goal for this website was to bring up the issue of poverty and housing, but we did it in a way that would involve the issue during the Progressive Era versus the issue today. This was done in order to show how long poverty has been looming as an issue, and it's not something relatively recent. In addition, we also provided a solution for the issue of housing having an impact on people's income.This website is to acknowledge the increasing percent of poverty, taxes, debt, and the lack of responsibility shown for these problems. To target the legislative government, we wish to shine light upon a recessive problem between the progressive and present era. The Problem: How society does not have the mobility to upgrade the poor. From poor living conditions to food stamps and homeless shelters, there are just too many ways for the working class to be stuck in poverty. We hope that you enjoy reading our articles about what we bring to light, and maybe take initiative to help in today's society.
