The Solution

After reading all this information about housing being involved with poverty, what is the solution in order to reform housing and therefore reforming poverty?

The Progressive EraImage result for unity

Settlement houses were a way for helping people in poverty, by providing education and
other facilities. A very prominent settlement house was the Hull House founded by Jane Addams and Emma Gates Starr established (National Women’s History Museum). As settlement houses began to gain recognition, reformers started to listen to issues their residents had, such as housing. This led to reformers bringing these issues to state officials, which meant there was more awareness towards these issues (Hansan).

Today In America

The YMCA today helps people by providing facilities as well. They provide education, childcare, sport activities, and ways for people to achieve their goals. YMCA is also very community focused and have an intent of helping people. People have a lot of experience

Our Solution

The solution is to simply help people. More specifically, providing resources and places for people to thrive in order to help people is the solution. The problem is that things are easier said than done. That’s why we need lawmakers to cooperate and help us bring this problem to light. One solution we could implement is that transportation is too costly. The cost of an average car is around $30,000. People with shaky jobs will find the cost an issue and be unable to afford a car. But for people that take the bus and subway to work, it is also an issue. The cost of a fare to two rides is $2.50 which may not seem like a lot, but as the trips start to add up, so do the prices.

Instead of supporting the rich, create more stability for the poor. Our government should create “safety-nets” protecting the poor instead of creating a society that separates them. Since 133 billion pounds of food are gone to waste, donate that to notorious orphanages and homeless shelters. Take a more direct way to encourage donations and volunteers at the shelters, and spread the pain and malnutrition these families go through. Take responsibility for the harm you have done, and do your job to fix your mistakes. Especially true in America, only regulated laws can change the fate of America. From ending racial discrimination and providing equality between genders, laws have prevented theoretical conflict. According to Beverly Gage, American Is Safer Than It Used to Be, So Why Do We Still Have Calls for Law and Order, “Cities, in particular, have become markedly less dangerous. Less than half as many police officers are killed in the line of duty today as in the mid-1970s.” This shows instances where governance interference has restores unity in our country.

To lower the percentage, the government should be creating more food stamps, more homeless shelters, investments in student loans and education center, etc. Although its great that the 21 wealthy percent is even more successful, are we willing to deprive the other 79%? Although this 21 percent may be successful and heroes by donating large sums of money to organizations, can they pay for the $19.5 trillion that our country is in debt of? Any logical person would admit otherwise. According to Trump and other political candidates, we should follow this order of action. Take away from the poor, give it to the rich in hopes that they invest in our country. This would be following Social Darwinism, a belief that was used in the Nazi Holocaust. Should the government trust in these celebrities because of their wealth? 79% of America should starve and wait patiently for this small population to feed them? Instead of taking away from the poor, give them more. An estimated 93.8 million are unemployed, which means they are forced to rely on the government’s support. The government is necessity in the working class. The government have given them rights to live on the minimal; therefore, the working class is only left to believe that the government keeps this relationship stays stable. Instead of entering this thoughtless and pitiful plan, there are other solutions. America may be on the brink of desperation, but there is still time to take the proper actions. Creating more jobs and investing into the future (youth) may be a more wise way of lowering debts. According to The Real Numbers, “58.7 percent of American adults are working if the actual employment-population ratio is taken into consideration, leaving about 82 million, or almost 41 percent of people unemployed.” This percentage is too high, and for practical reasons as well. For one, there is clear inequality between women and men. Although the Workplace Gender Equality Act of 2012 was imposed to improve gender equality, women are still found to make 78 cents to every dollar men make.

American tends to strip a lot of money from its people, yet it never provides any to its favor. For example, work hours are often long and uncomfortable, and workers rarely get breaks. Many workers work on holidays like Labor Day or even Christmas Eve. These workers are forced and sometimes given less than minimum wage, which is even considered illegal. A solution to raise income and the government’s budget is to for the people, instead of against. Create laws that are in favor of the middle class, instead of isolating them. Then, the income of the much bigger middle class would help raise the government’s budget as well.

Connections With the Government ~ Today In America

Viable housing is still expensive in America today. Therefore, economic mobility is very difficult for people in poverty due to housing taking up at least 30% of their income (Habitats for Humanity). This devouring of their income leads to people having to make harrowing decisions about other necessities. Consequently, people in poverty cannot leave this cycle due to their low income. However, what does the government have to do
with this? In many cases, the government are the ones to blame.

To say the least, it is time for the government to stop avoiding. According to Casselman, Most Americans Aren’t Middle Class Anymore, about 79% of Americans live in the Lower or Middle Class. If change does not happen, it doesn’t look like things will become any better. With president-elect Donald Trump, he seems that bringing prosperity to America is giving more leeway to the rich. According to Thompson, Things Are About to Get Much Worse for Poor Americans, “Although taxes would be cut at every level, “the highestImage result for political corruption-income taxpayers would receive the biggest cuts, both in dollar terms and as a
percentage of income,” according to the Tax Policy Center. The richest 0.1 percent of the country would save, on average, more than $1 million.” In other words, the lower class will have to save on much more while the rich get to prosper. The website also mentions Trump’s ways of reducing more than $6 trillion in taxes– the website states that he will preserve more than half of the government’s budget. Mr. Trump wishes to support the military while preserving Social Security. The other half that Mr. Trump plans to safe is usually used for the poor. ” Medicaid would shrink, as might the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Food stamps would be cut. Federal unemployment insurance spending would fall, as would housing and energy assistance for the poor. The Department of Education would have to be gutted, taking federal student loans with it.” Although no action has been taken yet, the inauguration for Mr. Trump is just around the corner and it doesn’t seem that he will change his mind. However, that does not mean that there is no hope. Part of being in a democratic country means following the people’s opinions, which are usually expressed through Congress.

The Problem with Poverty Today:

There are many ways to become poor, and very few to become affluent. In the U.S. alone, almost 50 million people are poor. Most of this population is in the middle or low class, with very small amounts invested for their children. The government claims that the youth will live with very few debts if they get a proper education (i.e. graduating college), but there are 44.2 million Americans in student loans. Adults find it very hard to get a job, even after graduating college. This is the “norm” for many Americans. What about those who can’t afford to have an education and live day-by-day? In honesty, the government takes no responsibility for this amount of people. Thus, more and more people are prone to becoming poor; to the point where it normal to see people sleeping on the street under the cold, winter sky. However, what does the government do, if not caring for its citizens? Frankly, the government does take action to care for its inhabitants. But, there’s a twist– they are biased towards the upper class. There is evidence that the government has “trusts” for the successful companies, working as partners. According to Studies Show, Congress Favors the Rich, “Jetblue Airways made $615 million in U.S. profits last year, but paid just 0.4 percent of that amount (less than half of 1 percent) in federal income taxes. The toy maker Mattel made $268 million in profits last year, but received a tax rebate of $46 million from the IRS, and Pacific Gas and Electric not only paid nothing in federal income taxes last year, it received a tax rebate of $84 million from the IRS, even though it made $1.8 billion last year.”

Tenements

The Progressive Era

The History of Tenements

Tenements in New York City became relevant during the 1850s when “landlords realized that profit could be made for building cheap housing for the poor” (Tenement). During this time, there were no laws for developers to provide certain things such as ventilation, so there wasn’t really a need for it in the tenements. These buildings tend to be associated with overcrowding and poverty. Tenements held multiple, working class families during the 19th century, although in deplorable conditions.

Tenement Conditions

Tenements were the most common home for immigrants due to viable housing being too expensive. Tenements were very dirty and unsafe, leading to unhealthy conditions for immigrants. Shafts with poor ventilation lead to diseases spreading. A testimony by Mrs. J.A. Miller explains how her room was “‘so dark  it is impossible to see eImage result for tenementsxcept just dimly at the noon hour'” and the shafts were”‘ a breeder of disease because of the refuse thrown down in the air shaft'” (Kalk). This testimony proves that tenements were a space of poor conditions and all kinds of danger. Landlords only cared about profits they made instead of their residents. They tended to not include necessities such as plumbing in order to decrease costs. Diseases were spread in the tenements, and many residents were not applicants of medical insurance. This lead to a huge difference between the wealthy and the poor. The ruined class were mocked and doomed into inevitable pain. Overall, conditions in these tenement houses were filthy and contaminated, which would lead to many more dilemmas.

Results

The contrast between the lifestyles of the upper-class and the lower-class were as clear as crystal. The upper-class lived in extravagant mansions and had the luxury of freedom. However, the lower-class received the complete opposite. They lived in the tenements mentioned previously, and were over-worked. Many of the upper-class lived in a certain area, not wanting to be associated with the factory workers. The same went for the lower-class. However, the lower-class lived close to their factories, reeking with stenches and smoke. There was smaller patches of land offered for the workers, since most space was occupied by the factories. However, there were hundreds of workers compared to the handful of opulent families. Every year, more deceived immigrants moved to America, and competition for these low-paying jobs grew. Thus, the unemployed population grew.

The Downside to the Success

During the Progressive Era, citizens were praising the government for creating more jobs and fixing flaws that the muckrakers have addressed. However, there was a huge flaw in this success. The praises were only addressed towards the more financially stable. However, with all of the urbanization and industrialization, there were many people who got the short end of the stick. There were almost no laws regulating their job rights. They often worked in unsafe and poor conditions in places such as sweatshops and factories. These workers had to deal with this because there were limited things they could do to move up in opportunities because of their low wages.

The Problem With Poverty Today

Frankly, the government does take action to care for its inhabitants. But, there’s a twist– they are biased towards the upper class. In the Progressive Era, the causes of poverty mostly lead to the government. Almost a century later, that has not changed. According to Causes of Poverty, the government’s policies are most directly to help the wealthier. “By contrast, the wealthier you are, the more likely you are to benefit from economic or political policies. The amount the world spends on military, financial bailouts and other areas that benefit the wealthy, compared to the amount spent to address the daily crisis of poverty and related problems are often staggering.” To name a few of these laws that leave the middle and lower class isolated: the wealthy are acquitted from paying payroll taxes, sales taxes on everything but bonds. and mortgage on a house. There are actual cases where wealthy companies got benefits from the government, benefits that are not given toImage result for betrayal everyone. According to Studies Show, Congress Favors the Rich, “Jetblue Airways made $615 million in U.S. profits last year, but paid just 0.4 percent of that amount (less than half of 1 percent) in federal income taxes. The toy maker Mattel made $268 million in profits last year, but received a tax rebate of $46 million from the IRS, and Pacific Gas and Electric not only paid nothing in federal income taxes last year, it received a tax rebate of $84 million from the IRS, even though it made $1.8 billion last year.” In general, poorer countries are looking for ways to stabilize their debt and climb their way out of poverty. The most common way for this is to export resources to decrease their debt. However, as more countries start to use this method, a fight rises for the cheapest resources. Resources become cheaper, meaning workers get paid much less. In most cases, the debt costs only increase. The results of this– almost half of the world lives on less than $2.50 a day. Most of these citizens in poverty are illiterate and were never given an education, giving them little opportunity to depart from poverty. The government can pretend to offer solutions and projects to help the lower class, but these projects are often a fail because the money is usually embezzled (by the government).

1892: The Downside to the Glory

Thousands of workers gather in protest for higher wages

On a cold December morning, thousands of workers have come together to fight for their rights. In multiple port cites including NYC and Chicago, roads have been closed down for the safety of the infuriated workers. The workers carry their children and march down 6th Avenue in hopes of a change.

One worker claims that she was promised a better life in America, but the reality was the complete opposite. “I brought my 3 children with me over 10 years go, but the debt I have to pay only grows.” She continued to share her hardship, and the crowd only nods in agreement. “I live in tenement houses that are meant for pigs: only 1 bathroom per floor, bugs infested in the bedrooms, and a space impossible to live with comfort. Neighbors get annoyed with one another because of paranoia and the hysteria of these unfair conditions.” Different witnesses claim that tenement owners have promised to rebuild tenement house and lower rent, but no action has been pursued. Years have passed of repeated promises, and the residents have become restless.  Instead of begging for change, they have decided to take matters into their own hands. Muckrakers have gathered together and released reports exposing the government of political corruption and slum housing. Many people are infuriated and demand a change. They wish to be offered what America claims to be: a land of freedom. These men and women claim they had better lives in their former homes, and say that they deserve to be treated with mutual respect. They shout out in cries, screaming for more equality and for the government to change their lives. However, the government has not answered, and have given vague answered on how “plans shall be discussed soon”. For now, the crowd seems to be raged and don’t intend on leaving until actual progress is conducted.

The Issue of Poverty Today

Money has started to control the world, and we let it. People living in poverty can’t rise out of it because we (society) don’t give them the opportunity. Aren’t we the ‘Land of Opportunity’? Why are people poor? Why are some parts of the country in constant debt and poverty? The issue is that people in poverty do not have mobility in society in order to get out of poverty because costs of essential necessities are too expensive for the poor to achieve. (i.e. food, insurance, houses)

People were forced into poverty and not able to escape the ‘dungeon’ because they didn’t fill society’s requirements. Those who were homeless and starving had little opportunities to live a healthy and relatively happy life. During the Progressive era, different professions gathered together to help the urban poor. Civil engineers improve transportation by paving streets and building bridges. Sanitation engineers tried to solve problems concerning pollution, waste disposal, and impure water supplies.” “Despite a rise in employment, nearly half of New York City’s population is living near poverty levels — a Image result for povertyproblem that is particularly striking in the city’s Asian population…”, from the Huffington Post. Although the amount of people of poverty  has decreased, the fact of the matter is that there still is way too many people living in sub-standard conditions. New York is a very expensive city to live in, and it is getting less affordable by the minute. “The vacancy rate hovers around 2% and rental prices in Brooklyn went up 10% last year. The average rent for a one-bedroom in New York City (including all five boroughs) is calculated at $3,100”, according to Investopidia. Many families who are trying to live in New York must live in rented apartments with no air-conditions and “slum-looking” rooms.

The solution was to make necessities less expensive, but it is easier said than done.
